Prepping for the Headshot Shoot, part 1 – What to Wear

One of the most important decisions you’ll make about your headshots is what to wear!  Here are some things to consider when choosing outfits for Business Headshots:

Audience:  It’s always best to wear what is appropriate to what you do and your industry.  Bankers/Financial Industry will tend to be more formally dressed (suit and tie), while realtors have more flexibility in their attire and are often more casual.  A doctor might want some shots in a lab coat.  How do you dress when meeting with clients?

In the four samples below, the difference in intended audience is obvious.

On the left, Mickey is a realtor.  She wanted to ensure her personable, open, and down-to-earth personality came through in the photo.  For her use, industry, and personality a more casual and loose photo was best with casual clothing to add to the effect.

Second from the left, Fiona needed photos to submit to a beauty pageant she was participating in.  Her very dressy and formal clothing were most appropriate to that audience, yet she wanted some of her fun-loving personality to come through as well so we had her barefooted and on the floor in this photo.

Kavitha, in the third photo from the left, is an Attorney and as such needed a photo that says professional, serious, tough.  For her photo it was appropriate to have more formal business attire and a more formal posture.

An Anesthesiologist, Joseph, in the photo on the far right, wanted one of this photos to reflect an approachable, professional image that clearly showed he is a doctor.

Who is your audience?

What about your personality defines you? What do you want your photos to say about you. Every photo tells a story. Let’s craft yours!
